Giant rugby ball home for RWC 2011

Tourism New Zealand’s giant rugby ball will stand on home ground for the first time – alongside The Cloud in the heart of Auckland’s party central on Queen’s Wharf during Rugby World Cup 2011.

 

The Government and Auckland city today (30.6.11) announced details of the fanzone, festival and showcase that Queen’s Wharf will become during the major event.

As well as free entry to the Giant Rugby Ball – the first chance for Kiwis, on home soil, to see the innovative structure that has won worldwide acclaim during global tourism promotions – rugby fans will be able to watch all 48 matches live on several big screens around the fanzone, and enjoy REAL festival events with free concerts by top Kiwi bands.

REAL New Zealand Festival 2011

Rugby is an integral part of being a Kiwi and Rugby World Cup 2011 is destined to turn New Zealand into a non-stop party zone called the REAL New Zealand Festival.

The festival is a nationwide celebration of New Zealand arts, heritage, culture, entertainment, business, food and wine which will run from 9 September – 23 October 2011 to complement the Rugby World Cup schedule.

From kai Māori / native foods to fine wine, from bungy jumping to waka / canoe racing – visitors will have the chance to experience something of what it means to be a ‘Kiwi.’

Nelson Wineart First XV Wine Festival 2011

Nelson – at the top of the South Island – claims two significant New Zealand firsts: the birthplace of rugby, and the first South Island grapevines. It’s also a community with a strong Italian heritage, and a seafood industry centre.

Wrapped around the Italy v USA rugby match (27.09.11), the four-day Nelson Wineart First XV Wine festival will feature an international blind tasting of 45 top wines from Italy, USA and New Zealand – from which the judging panel will select a ‘First XV’.
