Top Kiwi style struts for NZ Fashion Week – - New Zealand Fashion Week : 21 – 25 September, 2010
Kiwi style and creativity will take to the catwalks as New Zealand Fashion Week – the nation’s premier fashion event – celebrates its 10th birthday next month.
A host of top New Zealand fashion designers are preparing to showcase their Autumn/Winter 2011 collections, alongside new and emerging labels, at the Viaduct Harbour Marine Village on the Auckland waterfront.
NZ Fashion Week managing director Pieter Stewart says that the event’s 10th anniversary marks an important milestone.
“As with any industry there are ups and downs, but the success stories that NZ Fashion Week has helped create are many. We’ve battled through and 2010’s Fashion Week is going to be a great opportunity to toast this country’s growing success on the world stage.”
Leading US designer
New Zealand Fashion Week is famous for its celebrity guests, which in 2009 included former Baywatch star turned fashion designer Pamela Anderson, and MTV Asia and Discovery Channel presenter Denise Keller.
The guest list this year is just as star-studded, with American fashion designer Nicole Miller among those to be seated front row during the shows. Miller has designed dresses for some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Beyonce and Alicia Keys.
Her clothes have appeared in top international fashion publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Marie Claire, In Style and Glamour.
Kiwi designers come together
To celebrate New Zealand Fashion Week’s 10th birthday, the biggest list of fashion designers in the event’s history have confirmed shows.
Nom*D, Trelise Cooper and Zambesi, who have all shown at the event since its inception – are returning again in 2010. New shows this year include a wedding showcase put on by NZ Weddings – featuring names beloved by Kiwi brides such as Jane Yeh, Kate Dowman, Modes and Louise Anderson.
Event organisers are also putting together a 10-year retrospective of New Zealand Fashion Week highlights, featuring a mix of garments and film from the past decade. More than 320 designers have participated at Fashion Week, and the top 40 names will each have garments featured during the retrospective.
Other key names at the event are Karen Walker, Kate Sylvester, Wellington designer Alexandra Owen, Huffer, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Twenty Seven Names and Michelle Yvette.
Fashion Weekend sale
Although New Zealand Fashion Week is an industry event, the organisers also select some of the best designers to put on public shows during Fashion Weekend – two days of fashion, beauty, art, music, and festivity.
The NZ Weddings showcase and Sera Lilly are two of the top picks for Fashion Weekend. Visitors will also have a chance to see the retrospective, with 100 seats reserved especially for the public.
Fashionistas hunting for a bargain will also be drawn to the NZ Herald Designer Garage Sale, which features previous-season labels by designers featured at Fashion Week.
In 2009, more than 40 designers participated in the garage sale, showing more than NZ$1 million worth of stock.
